Jacob Wick gives private and group lessons on improvisation and trumpet playing, in person or via Skype.
Improvisation theory lessons incorporate histories and theories of jazz and improvised music from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. Topics covered include jazz rhythm; bebop; substitutions; free jazz movements in the US and Europe; and the use of extended techniques.
Holistic trumpet lessons incorporate breathing, mental, and body-positioning techniques aimed at helping trumpet students relieve themselves of the anxiety produced by standard, macho trumpet technique. Exercises are borrowed heavily from yogic breathing practices, Alexander technique, and the “Song and Wind” approach developed by Arnold Jacobs and the mid-20th century Chicago Symphony Orchestra brass section.
