The Roscoe Mitchell 70th Birthday Celebration was sold out, so I watched this video about French composer Eliane Radigue:
Katie Young took me to ISSUE Project Room in April for a “presentation” of two movements from her piece “Songs of Milarepa.” I remember being remarkable, not only for the music, but also for the situation: a room packed full of people drinking beer and lying on the ground, or sitting on a chair, or whatever. Completely haphazardly arranged around 2 (or was it 4?) speakers – also not arranged in any particular way, if I remember correctly – on the floor. In any case, it was most definitely not a performance, and that made the whole experience that much more intimate, that much more beautiful.
Shane Perlowin and I played a duo set last weekend in Asheville and Scott Hubener was kind of enough to not only film, but also post some high-quality video of it:
ATHICA has posted video of my performance there in November, as part of the secret swarm tour I did with Katherine Young:
Part 1:
1. butt drag
2. police bees
David Eklund has posted a video of my swarm performance at the Bridge PAI in Charlottesville, VA a couple weeks ago. It’s edited down to 15 minutes from the original length (which I think was more like 25 or 30), but you get the idea. All the sweating and spluttering is still there, though…
Been looking for a record by this guy for four years, ever since I saw him play in Amsterdam while I was studying abroad there. Finally found one this afternoon at Downtown Music Gallery.
If you haven’t seen this, see it:
In the last few weeks I have heard a number of people and even more newscasts refer to the “recent spate” of suicides of gay teenagers. I have told at least one of them and hope to tell all of them that it is not recent, and it is not a spate, that this has been going on for a long, long time, and that the only difference between now and then is that suddenly gay people’s lives are newsworthy. Maybe this is an improvement; maybe this brief moment when gay people’s lives are suddenly visible will actually yield some kind of substantive societal change; maybe things actually are getting better.
