this weekend’s fishing forecast

Kermits, Ms Piggies, Animals-

Last fall a very good friend of mine who I occasionally refer to as my “patron” (actually “patrón” might be more appropriate) had the foresight to give me the South Carolina Wildlife calendar for 2010 – 2011. Since “Wildlife” of course means “Hunting & Fishing,” each day has a little icon of a fish in the bottom right hand corner that indicates how good the fishing will be that day and at what time one should attempt to fish. In light of this, I will include the fishing forecast in the following gig announcements.

Also, for those who like to feel sad, this will very likely be my last foreseeable performance with any of the following groups, for any of the following reasons:

- I am leaving
- They are leaving
- I am a sub

may flowers

Greetings from New York, where the weather is remarkably similar right now as it was a month ago in Asheville. This month brings many things: Endagered Species Day, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Judgement Day. This month will also bring a recording session I am very excited about with one of my musical heroes/best Halloween costume ideas, Nate Wooley, as well as a community-sourced field guide developed last weekend at campcamp, to be released as an e-book on the Information Department website (I’ll write up a little round-up of that experience this week, if you’d like to know more). May will also be, as some of you know, my last month in New York, before two months of self-imposed exile in North Carolina to work on some solo material before heading out to San Francisco to begin an MFA in the Social Practice Workshop at the California College of the Arts. So come out and say hi (or bye, although I really hate saying goodbye):

The Great Outdoors

For my contribution in the Information Department action WHERE AM I for campcamp, part of the 8th Annual Transmodern Festival in Baltimore, I will hold a book/equipment swap with the theme The Great Outdoors. The Great Outdoors will provide an answer to the question WHERE AM I by creating a dynamic field guide comprised of books, trinkets, camping equipment, and so on, provided by and exchanged between participants in campcamp and the Transmodern Festival in general.

bubbles

Hello everybody-

When I was in high school, I wrote a tune called “Bubbles.” I was reminded of this song today as I was walking outside, enjoying the balmy weather, thinking about how all of you must be on your respective roofs (rooves? why is the plural of “roof” not “rooves?”), in your respective rooftop jacuzzis. I then remembered that the original title of the song was not actually “Bubbles,” and that it was instead named after my boyfriend at the time, and that I quickly changed the title of the tune after I broke up with him (ok, he broke up with me, whatever). I then thought about how playing a tune named after your ex must be the next best/worst thing to having a tattoo of your ex’s name. On your neck.

Anyway, if you can get out of bed within the next 11 days (good luck!), here’s where I’ll be:

a redundancy I can be proud of

I have recently been awarded fiscal sponsorship by the Manhattan-based arts service organization Fractured Atlas. Unlike the sponsorship I was awarded in 2009 for my ROAD TRIP: drawing a perimeter of the united states project, this sponsorship is not for a specific project, but rather for my ongoing output as a whole. Or, if you’d like to think of it this way, the sponsorship is for the specific project of my (artistic) life.

What does this mean? Maybe this handy legal text will shine some light: Jacob Wick is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the purposes of Jacob Wick must be made payable to Fractured Atlas and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Donate now!

Essentially, if you like what I am doing and would like me to do more, or to just keep on doing what I’m doing, you can make a tax-deductible donation to my cause via Fractured Atlas. To that end, let me describe, in brief, my current output, which your donations will help to support:

information-department.net launched

In expectation of receiving 1000 new (non-phantom) “IF YOU SEE/SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING” cards, I have finally launched information-department.net, the home base of Information Department. Check back soon for an open call to bloggers, artists, and researchers, and in the future for (hopefully) further actions, guest contributions, and more.

bill murray

Look-

At some point some time ago, somebody (maybe one of you) told me a story about Bill Murray. I like stories about celebrities because they tend to treat the celebrity as a rarely-seen wild animal who occasionally pops in up in our domestic environs. The story, to put it simply, is about Bill Murray showing up at somebody’s house show in Brooklyn, staying the entire time and falling asleep on the couch. Which means that in the morning everybody woke up and Bill Murray was on the couch. Good story, right?
