total insanity

On Monday, the racist, Islamophobic government of the Netherlands made a concerted attempt to annihilate their country’s rich progressive artistic heritage. Does anybody care?

Amongst the institutions that will most likely be shuttered within the next two years are STEIM, a pioneering and vitally necessary electro-acoustic media lab, and the Rijksakademie, an incredible facility and internationally recognized 1 to 2-year residency program for artists worldwide. I cannot believe that these two places, where I spent a week shuttling back and forth between in December, have been so callously excised from the world.

The Roscoe Mitchell 70th Birthday Celebration was sold out, so I watched this video about French composer Eliane Radigue:

Katie Young took me to ISSUE Project Room in April for a “presentation” of two movements from her piece “Songs of Milarepa.” I remember being remarkable, not only for the music, but also for the situation: a room packed full of people drinking beer and lying on the ground, or sitting on a chair, or whatever. Completely haphazardly arranged around 2 (or was it 4?) speakers – also not arranged in any particular way, if I remember correctly – on the floor. In any case, it was most definitely not a performance, and that made the whole experience that much more intimate, that much more beautiful.
