two days until it still isn’t quite christmas

Hello-

Have you been to Sunset Park lately? As in, since directly after Thanksgiving? No? Why not?

If you had done the right thing and visited Brooklyn’s most important cultural hotspot, you would have noticed that, on 5th Ave, from about 42nd St all the way down to 62nd St, there are speakers hanging down from lampposts, spreading Christmas joy in the form of 5 carols, sung by children, one in Spanish (“Feliz Navidad,” of course!), the rest in English. The whole loop takes less than 10 minutes, so if you are walking a distance of, say, 10 blocks, you will have the opportunity to hear some songs twice! Not only that, but you will hear the introduction to the whole loop, where a genial schoolteacher introduces the 7 children who are about to sing.

A bit of math (hi Mom!): let’s say the loop is actually 10 minutes, and that it plays 12 hours a day, from 8 to 8. So then we have 6 cycles an hour, 12 hours a day, for 30 days. That’s 2160 repetitions!

who do we appreciate?

Something to aspire to: I am currently listening to a segment on the BBC (yes, I am classy) about fake foreigners. As in, there is a Chinese company, or many, that cast assorted foreigners to appear at board meetings of other Chinese companies to lend the impression that said company is internationally recognized, etc. As in, an Austrian is talking now about his experience as a “German engineer” at a meeting for some company in Shanghai. Apparently so long as you wear a suit and look “professional,” you’ve got it made. “Obviously Chinese people are not very picky about foreigners,” somebody just said.

This week my kettle boilth with excitement: Thursday my double solo tour with Katherine Young kicks off at the Sycamore in Ditmas Park (we’re going to wait a week before we actually go anywhere, but whatever); and Saturday I’ll be playing with Andrew D’Angelo‘s big band at the University of the Streets.

sycamore swarm video uploaded

Uploaded the video from my performance of swarm at Sycamore Bar before I left for Harold:

There is a slight disconnect between the video and audio tracks, I think, which is a little unnerving at times. This is a result of the unfortunate combination of my ineptitude and iMovie 08′s ineptitude. A thousand apologies, etc.

Look-

I don’t know what you’re doing Thursday, or if you’ve heard that Thursday is the new Friday. Personally, I really enjoy taking Fridays off and telling myself that the weekends are for amateurs – whether or not this is just a way of consoling myself is up to you. Regardless of what anybody is saying about this Thursday/Friday mixup, though, I am not about to take Thursdays off. I mean, really.

Anyway, this Thursday, August 19 I am playing solo after Katie Young, otherwise known as Katherine A Young, plays with her band Pretty Monsters. We are going to do all of this – and more – at the Sycamore Bar in Ditmas Park. Have you been there? It’s nice – there is a flower shop in front and a garden in back. They have a lot of things that you will really enjoy drinking. So come early and buy me flowers.

Details (from Katie):

what/who:
PRETTY MONSTERS
- new band featuring the talents of violinist ERICA DICKER, guitarist OWEN STEWART-ROBERTSON, and percussionist MIKE PRIDE.

JACOB WICK
- anticipating the release of his solo record, SWARM, Mr. Wick will be performing a killer solo set.
