Information Department

Information Department will be a loose network of individuals dedicated to researching, monitoring, and interacting with the political distribution of information on local, national, and international scales.

Information, by definition, is neither passive nor neutral: according to the Oxford English Dictionaryto inform is “to shape the mind….to train or instruct (a person) in a particular course of action.” Information is, therefore, always political: how information is distributed (via what media), who it is distributed to (target audiences), and from whom it originates (governments, corporations, individuals) has a powerfully direct effect on the events, places, people, etc. are understood and interpreted. Information Department has been formed to investigate this phenomenon in the age of social media and the 24-hour news cycle.
