hey kevin! this post was just all the postcards i had send from the "official" beginning of the project to that current point, which was several days in. one of your postcards was sent before i actually started, which you can see here, and the other was sent after i made that post. you can view all the postcards received/sent between july 31 - aug 7 here.

thanks josh. what i mean, i think, is that one should simply be aware of where one is. that is to say, in order to live one’s life, it is not possible to BE different all the time, nor is it necessary, nor would it be valuable. that’s what i mean by referencing barthes’s notion of the “effort towards difference,” which i read as simply the awareness/recognition of where one is in relation to a path one may (or may not) be diverging from. compromise is not a problem so long as you are aware that you are compromising and conscious of what said compromise entails, not just falling into one or another situation blindly. does that make sense?

jacob,
really a remarkable essay (possibly even two essays?). thank you for writing it and giving so many beautiful questions to us. i’ve just finished reading it once and will definitely have to reread it several more times, but already i wonder:
“Perhaps, though, the truly radical thing to do would be … to embrace not what we have in common with a specific identity/unit of control but our distance from it.”
Does it have to be so all-or-nothing? My personal feeling is that as much as i prize agency (and hopefully that’s clear from the Cage videos we worked on), i find that in this life i’m engaged in a ceaseless and necessary negotiation between asserting agency and … well, for lack of a better term, “coming together.” that is, in order to BE with someone (however you might define that) i have to relinquish some agency. i have to compromise. it can be liberating at first and then painful and it forever seesaws in both directions, but it never seems to go away. it never settles or stops moving.
so by this notion, perhaps we need to hold with both our hands (as it were), simultaneously, what we have in common and what creates alterity. a perilous middle path?
dunno, but i’ll definitely be returning to this essay in the weeks to come. thanks again.

I was very cool to watch . indeed i like the music of Sean perlowin in Ahleuchatists . There were part that actualy were very similar to what i’ve heared . and i also like your palying , and the breathing in the trumpet is a good idea to create awkward sound
